PATTERNS ON GLASS

In my jewelry, dinnerware, lighting fixtures, window panels, and sculptures, I use various techniques to create patterns on glass.

Tabletop Lamp - Rust Maize Pattern

Curved copper lamp with patina, enamels fired on glass panel.

Most frequently I apply powdered glass enamels onto clear glass sheets using silk screen and stencil techniques, then fire the glass in a kiln. Like a ceramic glaze, the enamel design is permanently bonded to the underlying form during the firing and forms a durable, waterproof finish. After firing a glass sheet, I sometimes cut, rearrange, and overlaps images to create new patterns. Fired to 1500 degrees, the glass layers fuse, creating jewel-like intensity and depth.

Any two-dimensional image can be transferred to glass. I frequently find inspiration in Japanese textile patterns, botanical illustrations, art from ancient cultures, and children’s book illustrations. I have also produced commissioned work incorporating family photographs and corporate logos among other custom designs.
